
Mozambique
Doctors with Africa CUAMM’s work in Mozambique began in 1978, shortly after independence (1975). Since then it has involved the provinces of Nampula, Niassa, Zambesia, Sofala, Gaza e Maputo. In 1993 emergency action was begun in Sofala that evolved into a development project which ended in 2000. 2001 saw the conclusion of a project to train mid- and basic-level health care executives in the Province of Gaza, activity in support of the health care services in the Zambezia province, and projects in Sofala and Gaza connected to the emergency situation which followed the floods of 2000. In 2002 an ongoing project was launched in support of the Beira central hospital (province of Sofala); in 2003 in the same province, a public health care project was begun in the Beira and Dondo districts. Since 2004 there has been a support project at the Faculty of Medicine at the Catholic University of Beira and a project offering elementary training for obstetricians at Alua (Nampula province).
