Tanzania
Doctors with Africa CUAMM has been in Tanzania since the end of the 1960s. After the 1980s our joint projects have been developed mainly alongside government bodies, in various areas of the country. Currently our work is concentrated in the areas of Dar es Salaam and Iringa, with renewed attention on the health and social services offered by the Church. The health reforms initiated in 1993 have gradually changed the situation and modified the opportunities for action: the private non-profit organisation once more seems an essential component in order to guarantee services which are accessible to all. Notwithstanding the fact that Tanzania still finds itself on the bottom level of the world table of wages and living conditions, it is no longer the centre of attention for international agencies. Although the project, which should consolidate all the programmes currently running, still lacks the necessary financing, Doctors with Africa CUAMM has, with its own funds, guaranteed grants to ensure that the costs of these services are kept as low as possible in order not to interrupt ongoing cooperation with the health services with which, and for whose benefit, the project will be undertaken. The programme’s strategy is precisely this: to keep prices low in order to ensure that the sick have access to treatment.
